The two-month needs assessment of public libraries conducted under the Global Libraries Bulgaria Programme aiming to design a project proposal to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for free public access to the internet was finalized. 2,350 libraries were interviewed - 850 libraries more than envisaged due to the active interest demonstrated and the readiness to support the libraries stated by chitalishte boards of trustees and local authorities.
The results are currently being processed. In October 2008, the Project Management Unit will announce the list of target libraries and the support packages as approved by the Steering Committee. This information and the financial parameters regarding the contributions of the Foundation and the Bulgarian Government will be used when designing the project proposal to the Foundation. The response of the Foundation is expected in April 2009.
If approved, the project implementation phase will be launched in June 2009.
