840 libraries applied for inclusion in the 2009 phase of the Glob@l Libraries Bulgaria Program.
Applications were issued together with the 245 municipalities where the corresponding libraries and chitalishte are located. Thus municipalities commit to long-term support of all libraries which applied. Municipalities filed an average of 3 applications for inclusion of libraries, with the largest share of candidatures - 14 and 13 - filed by the municipalities of Dulovo and Pleven. 95% of the candidatures were chitalishte, 3% - regional libraries and 1% each - municipal and town libraries.
The Glob@l Libraries - Bulgaria Program aims to facilitate access to information and services for Bulgarian citizens via the Internet. 900 public libraries across the country are planned to receive information and telecommunication (IT) equipment and Internet access that will enhance the scope of services for the library visitors and local community. The program envisages ensuring IT equipment for at least 700 more public libraries through additional resources. Approximately 3000 librarians will be trained in computer skills, new services and library management.
The selection procedure and the requirements for inclusion in the Glob@l Libraries Bulgaria Program were presented during the months of May and June 2009 in all 28 districts of Bulgaria. More than 3500 library and chitalishte workers, as well as representatives of municipality administrations, attended the information sessions.
