Mr. Robin Knowles, Director, and Ms. Mieke Barbé, Project Manager, at the Brussels-based NGO Civic Agenda paid a visit to Bulgaria on 27–28 February 2012. During their visit, they met representatives of the PMU and the program partners and learned about the program’s achievements to date.
The purpose of the visit was for Civic Agenda representatives to learn about and present to EU institutions the accomplishments of the Global Libraries Program funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in the five EU member states – Bulgaria, Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, and Romania – in view of libraries’ inclusion in Agenda 2020 and the joint funding of their activities to achieve governments’ development and information society goals.
The guests visited the libraries in the village of Baylovo, Gorna Malina municipality, and the village of Stolnik, Elin Pelin municipality. The guests were welcomed with the traditional home-made bread and cheese pastry (banitsa) and received information about the establishment, history, and activities of the chitalishte and chitalishte libraries and about the positive change in library usage following the provision of the computer equipment under the Glob@l Libraries – Bulgaria Program. The Deputy Mayor of Gorna Malina Municipality, Mr. Angel Zhilanov, and the Deputy Mayor of Elin Pelin Municipality, Ms. Angelina Dimitrova, presented the key culture-related projects implemented in their municipalities and the involvement of the chitalishte and chitalishte libraries. The meetings at the libraries were also attended by Ms. Tomislava Kremenska, Education and Culture Chief Specialist in Gorna Malina Municipality, Mr. Boyko Nedelchev, Mayor of the village of Baylovo, Mr. Dimitar Denev, Mayor of the village of Stolnik, and library visitors.
